The mortar should be a firm consistency and not sloppy or runny.Using a shovel or trowel, apply the mortar to the sub-base, levelling it out to about 15mm below the string line. Ripple or roughen up the surface of the bed to allow for compression of the paving tile during final placing and only spread enough mortar for one flag at a time. Our standard lead time for porcelain tiles is 2-3 weeks. If you require the tiles sooner, please contact us to discuss potential options.

First method is to use a 22.5mm deep trim or step nosing, and the second is to mitre the edges. If doing a step with a ruser, the trim and riser can be held into place, using Edge Side Clips. Add a layer of 40mm crushed concrete or gravel and compact it down so that it has a 2% inclination to allow efficient drainage for the tiles. If laying externally, a water test can be done to ascertain whether adequate water run-off has been achieved. Set out the area to be tiled using a horizontal level line and a second sloped line to create a fall. This is a great way of keeping the same overall feel eg cement or concrete look but changing up the colour scheme in a stylish way.

Recognising these problems early and implementing effective solutions is key to a successful project and a professional-looking finish. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to tackle common issues. New construction accounts for over 80% of the ceramic tile market, with porcelain tiles gaining significant popularity.

Proper layout prevents thin tile cuts at edges and maintains symmetry. Ceramic wall tiles are lightweight, easy to install, and best for kitchens, living spaces, and light-duty walls. Ceramic is produced from refined clay, fired to achieve hardness and smoothness. Ceramic tiles cut easily, absorb moderate moisture, and maintain a polished or matte surface suitable for most interiors. Tile selection must align with wall type—ceramic for lightweight domestic interiors, porcelain for moisture-rich bathrooms, and stone for decorative depth. Adhesive classification C1 or C2 must correspond with substrate density and tile weight to maintain cohesive strength.

Rinse surfaces thoroughly and dry with a soft towel to prevent streaking or residue. Living room wall tiling focuses on visual impact, texture, and light reflection rather than waterproofing. Proper surface preparation and alignment maintain aesthetic balance and structural strength. The following process ensures both technical accuracy and design harmony.

Polish the surface with a soft cloth after grout curing. Verify joint uniformity and complete seal coverage before declaring installation finished. Curing stabilises adhesion and prevents movement or shrinkage. Leave tiled walls undisturbed for at least 24 hours at 5–30 °C. Full curing ensures permanent bonding and mechanical stability.

They are highly resistant to moisture, temperature fluctuations, and frost, making them perfect for patios, terraces, and outdoor walkways. Ensure the tiles have a slip-resistant finish for safety in wet conditions, particularly in outdoor areas. It is not always necessary to seal porcelain patio tiles. However, sealing the grout lines can help prevent staining and protect the overall appearance of the tiles. This is a straightforward task that could expand the lifespan of your tiled floor. Just make sure you use a waterproof sealant designed for outdoor use.

Allow the adhesive and grout to cure fully before turning on the underfloor heating, gradually increasing the temperature over several days. Porcelain tiles are generally non-porous and do not require sealing. However, in certain cases—such as polished porcelain—sealing may be recommended to prevent staining or enhance the tile’s appearance. Check the specific requirements of your tiles and consult the product guidelines for sealing. No, despite looking smooth and sleek, porcelain slabs are slip-resistant as long as they are maintained properly. Because porcelain is non-porous, water damage isn’t a concern, and you won’t have to worry about protecting and maintaining them every year. Porcelain paving slabs are typically stain and frost-resistant, too, meaning it’s weatherproof and safe to use in all seasons. Another reason for porcelain’s popularity is its durability and resistance to erosion. There’s no getting around the fact that installing a new patio or driveway can be costly, so ensuring you get a long-lasting material is essential.

This is called slaking, and allows all the molecules to fully absorb the water. A concrete slab is an ideal base for a floor installation project, but wood can work as well, as long as it’s firm. These materials and tools are available from most high-street hardware stores, so doing the job yourself is definitely possible. You can usually clean porcelain with just a damp mop or cloth and mild detergent, and even spills like wine or juice are unlikely to seep in and cause a stain.

For added safety, we recommend choosing porcelain tiles with an anti-slip finish to prevent accidents in wet conditions. Final inspection and ongoing protection preserve surface quality. Check for hollow sounds, consistent joints, and smooth surface reflection. Apply sealant on porous tiles or grout to prevent water absorption and staining. Avoid impact, heavy hanging, or scrubbing for at least 72 hours after installation. A perfectly flat, clean, and primed wall guarantees strong tile adhesion and flawless alignment.

Clean and sand the surface, apply a high-adhesion primer, and use a paint designed explicitly for tiles. This is a great way to change the aesthetics of a room without spending a fortune. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are ideal for most spaces, including kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and outdoor areas.

Mark a horizontal datum line and vertical guides before fixing. Dry-lay several tiles with spacers to visualise spacing. Balanced layout ensures even tile cuts on both edges and avoids narrow strips near corners. A notched trowel spreads adhesive evenly across the wall surface. Trowel notch size determines adhesive depth—6 mm for small tiles, 10 mm for large tiles. Consistent adhesive coverage maintains tile bond strength.

Apply diagonally with a rubber float to fill all joints completely. Once partially set, clean the surface with a damp sponge in circular motion. After full drying, polish with a soft cloth to enhance sheen.

So the mastic will hold, the only question then is the porcelain tiles themselves. If the ceramic is curved or bulges in the middle, you may crack the tiles you put over it, when you add weight to them. You can test this, if you can spare losing a tile, just place a porcelain tile over the ceramic and add lots of weight. If it holds, then I would go ahead and tile the entire floor. Consider the room where you will be installing the porcelain floor tiles. If we’re talking about a kitchen, bathroom or hallway (rooms that are prone to moisture) then make sure to waterproof the area beforehand.

For Caesar’s large formats or 20mm outdoor collections, use deformable cement-based adhesives compliant with EN standards (C2 TE S1 or higher). To work out how much of the tile you need to cut, place a tile on top of the last whole tile you laid next to the wall. Next, place another tile on top and slide it up against the wall, with a tile spacer placed between the wall and the tile. You can now mark a line where the edge of the top tile overlaps the tile underneath, which will show you where to cut the tile.

nuttige inhoud is therefore essential in these projects. Discover more insights about UK tile industry trends here. The UK ceramic tile industry is largely concentrated regionally, particularly in areas like Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme. For instance, in a bathroom, begin at the shower wall and work towards the door. Dry-laying your tiles beforehand lets you visualize the arrangement and spot potential challenges, especially with larger format tiles. Check out our guide on How to Master Porcelain Tile Selection.
